SALEM, Ore. – For the second time in three days, the Timbers U23 squad defeated its I-5 rival, Lane United, as on Saturday evening the Timbers U23s downed Lane United, 3-0. The win makes it eight-straight matches overall that the Timbers U23s are now unbeaten.

“We’re pleased with the team’s continued growth throughout this summer,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “Our guys have to stay focused on that part of the process as we push towards the playoffs.”

In a toasty first half that was dominated by the Timbers U23s with 11 shots to just three for Lane United, the first goal of the match came when Timur Zhividze beat a defender about 30 yards from goal and ripped a shot on frame, finding the back of the net to put the home side up 1-0 just before the halftime whistle.

Lane United came out of the locker rooms looking for the equalizer and almost found it midway through the second stanza, forcing Jordan Farr into a sprawling save to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.

Late in the match, Willie Spurr came off the bench for the Timbers U23s and provided the instant spark, breaking through the Lane United defense before feeding the perfect pass to Francesco Amorosino 18 yards from goal. Amorosino blasted his shot past the Lane United goalkeeper to make it 2-0 in the 89th minute of play.

Benji Michel then put the nail in the coffin in stoppage time when he was fouled in the box by the goalkeeper and then slotted home his penalty kick, resulting in the 3-0 victory.

The shutout is the second of the week for the Timbers U23s against Lane United, creating separation in the standings between the two PDL squads. For Jordan Farr, it marks his third shutout of the 2017 PDL season as he made three big-time saves on Saturday.

For match, the Timbers U23s outshot Lane United, 19-10.

The Timbers U23s (5-1-4) are back in action for an exhibition friendly match on Wednesday in Bend, Ore. Kickoff against South Sound FC is slated for 7 p.m. at Summit High School. The Timbers U23s then return to McCulloch Stadium next Sunday for a 12:30 p.m. match vs. Victoria Highlanders FC in another pivotal PDL match.
