SALEM, Ore. – On a historic night in Salem, the Timbers U23s showed off an exciting attacking brand of soccer en route to dominating PDX FC at McCulloch Stadium in a preseason match, 7-2. With more than 500 in attendance to take in the action, the Timbers U23s showed great promise for the 2017 campaign that is ahead.

“This week was positive in many ways, capped off with an exciting performance in tonight’s friendly,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “The quick combinations between the players in the attacking third was encouraging to see this early in the process. With that said, the group recognizes we have plenty of things we can clean up, and they are motivated to attack those between now and Wednesday’s match.”

The Timbers U23s got on the board first early on when Josh Noonkester headed home a corner-kick cross, putting the home side up 1-0 inside of the first 15 minutes.

After PDX FC scored in transition to level the score, Timbers U23 midfielder Francesco Amorosino found the back of the net to put the U23s back in front. Once again, however, the visitors scored in transition and made it 2-2 inside of the first 30 minutes, but showing resiliency, the Timbers U23s scored twice more before the first 45 minutes were up, taking a 4-2 lead into the locker rooms. Rey Ortiz and Rolando Velazquez were the two Timbers U23 players to find their way onto the scoresheet late in the half.

In the second half, some adjustments were made, and Amorosino came out of the locker room on fire, blasting his second goal of the evening to push the lead to 5-2. Fellow midfielder Gio Magana-Rivera then buried a shot of his own later in the half to make it 6-2, and to cap off the evening, Willie Spurr finished off a beautiful attacking sequence in the 89th minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from Timur Zhividze.

In what was a dominant second stanza, the Timbers U23s maintained possession for almost the entirety of the half on the way to the five-goal victory.

The Timbers U23s are back in action on Wednesday, May 10, when the team hosts Southern Oregon Fuego in another preseason contest. Kickoff at McCulloch is slated for 7 p.m. in the final preseason game for the Timbers U23s.
