TIMBERS U23 TIE 1-1 TO CONCLUDE THE WEEKEND AGAINST CALGARY

SALEM, Ore. — Timbers U23 end the doubleheader weekend on a 1-1 tie against Calgary.

A warm and sunny afternoon in Salem brought the Timbers U23 and Calgary Foothills FC U23 back to the pitch for their second game in three days.

Early on, Calgary pressured the Timbers, disrupting their build up play. A goal for the visitors came in the 21st minute after Calgary regained possession in the Timbers’ half to go up 1-0.

After the break, it was the Timbers who looked to be on the front foot. The addition of Sofiane Djeffal in the midfield provided more opportunities down the center of the pitch, and the home crowd could sense a goal coming.

In the 71st minute, Berti Fourier finished an opportunity similar to his goal on Friday. His shot cut his way through the defense for the equalizer and gave the squad a goal and boost of energy.

The game then opened up a bit more. Calgary quickly looked to fight back, missing several chances in the box including a ball that bounced off the woodwork and was cleared. Goalkeeper, Remi Prieur came up with huge saves in the second half to keep the game tied at 1-1.

The Timbers created several more chances in the final ten minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net. The whistle blew and game ended in a share of the points.

“An undefeated weekend against the defending National Champions shows significant progress for our group,” stated head coach, Aaron Lewis. “Our locker room feels good about the momentum gained through two hard ought matches, and yet is focused on taking more steps next week.”

The Timbers U23 hit the road for the next three matches, including a game in Eugene this Saturday, June 8 against Lane United FC.
