Timbers U23 suffer a 2-0 loss against the Highlanders of Victoria B.C. Sunday, May 19th.

VICTORIA, B.C. — The Timbers U23 suffer a 2-0 loss against the Highlanders of Victoria, B.C. in their second game of the USL League Two opening weekend.

Right off the pitch, the Highlanders put pressure on, causing the Timbers U23 backline to move around. Goal clearances from defenders such as Jesse Martin and Gerardo Lopez allowed goalkeeper, Austin Rogers to make save after save.

In the 45th minute, the Highlanders were able to produce a goal which was then withheld due to a foul in the box. No less than a minute into stoppage time was Victory Shumbusho and the Highlanders able to strike back and go up 1-0 at the half.

The Highlanders kept their momentum heading into the second half, scoring right off the bat in the 47th minute with a goal by Sean Young.

The Timbers U23 made substitutions in the second half getting Martin Ngoh, Timur Zhividze, and Lucas Bueno on the pitch to help on the attack. Ngoh and Zhividze added a new level of intensity to the field, putting the squad in possession to score. Both had opportunities to find the back of the net and neither were able to capitalize.

“The cohesion of our group was better than Friday and we learned a lot about who we have this week on the road,” said head coach, Aaron Lewis. “We look forward to getting in front of home fans next week as we look to build.”

The Timbers U23 return back to Salem this week with their HOME-OPENER happening Friday, May 24th, 7:00 pm at McCulloch Stadium. First 300 fans get free t-shirts featuring a new Beer Garden at the stadium.
