SALEM, Ore. – The Timbers U23 started their 2019 preseason campaign with a 2-1 victory over NPSL side PDX FC.

A sunny, warm day in Salem brought nearly 300 fans to the Capital FC complex where they enjoyed beer, tacos, and a great game of soccer. The “Fanzone” presented by Harvey Realty gave kids and parents the opportunity to have their faces painted as well as test their skills on games such as dart ball and cornhole.

On the field, the first preseason match began with Timbers U23 dominating possession but struggling to break through PDX FC’s well-organized defense.

In the 39th minute, Timur Zhividze found the back of the net off a ground-level cross from Lucas Bueno, putting the Timbers U23 up 1-0. PDX FC responded just before halftime on a well-taken free kick just outside the box by Ryo Asa, tying the match at 1-1.

With 7 minutes left of the 90, Kohl Hurtado scored the game winner off a penalty kick to bring the Timbers U23 up 2-1.

“Today was positive on several fronts” said head coach, Aaron Lewis. “We continue to establish the way we want to play, we are continuing to evaluate players looking to make our team, and we are increasing our overall fitness levels. We’ll get back at it tomorrow morning as we focus now on building on what’s ahead.”

The second preseason match of the year is set for Wednesday, May 8th at 7:00 p.m. vs newly formed side TFA U23 at the Capital FC Complex. The Timbers U23 USL League Two season will officially kick off May 17th with a roadtrip to play TSS FC Rovers in Canada.
