Timbers U23 Announces Signing of First Four College Standouts for 2017 Team

SALEM, Ore. – The Timbers U23 announced the signing of the team’s first four collegiate players to have made commitments to play for the squad during the 2017 season, with all four players having local ties to Salem and Capital FC. University of Portland’s Reid Baez, Georgetown University’s Edson Martinez, Creighton University’s Stefan Wutte, and Corban University’s Jordan Farr make up the first four commitments for the 2017 Timbers U23s, pending league approval.

“These four players represent the cornerstones of our Salem community in the way they have represented Capital Timbers, their families, and college teams,” said Timbers U23 Managing Director Lloyd Fobi. “We are proud to have them join us this summer, and we are certain they will continue to represent the Timbers U23s in an exemplary light as we look to continue the growth of soccer in Salem.”

Baez joins the Timbers U23 team following garnering West Coast Conference (WCC) All-Freshman Team honors with the Portland Pilots in 2015 while then helping the Pilots to a WCC Championship in 2016, all while earning a berth to the NCAA National Tournament. Baez was a standout midfielder previously at Sprague High School and with the CFC Boca Juniors, and was a member of the Portland Timbers Academy since 2013.

Martinez joins the Timbers U23s after a season playing with the Georgetown Hoyas. Martinez hails from Salem and was a standout midfielder at North Salem High School while also playing on the State Championship CFC Boca Juniors team. Additionally, Martinez was a member of the Portland Timbers Academy.

Wutte returns to Salem following a couple of years playing at Creighton. Prior to his time at Creighton, Wutte was a member of the Willamette University team, leading the Bearcats to a 13-5-2 record during his sophomore season. Wutte attended West Salem High School and was a Portland Timbers U18 Academy player as a midfielder and defender while also competing for CFC.

Farr, the 2015 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Player of the Year in the NAIA, has served as Corban’s primary goalkeeper for three years, collecting All-America honors and multiple First-Team All-Conference accolades during his time with the Warriors. Farr played for the Charlotte Eagles in the 2016 PDL season, leading the entire league in goals-against-average (0.25). During each of his three years at Corban, Farr has guided Corban to the NAIA National Tournament, including a trip to the NAIA Final 16 during the 2016 campaign. In addition, he was a Cascade High School and CFC standout goalkeeper.

“What an honor it is to see kids that learned to play soccer at CFC get to play with the Timbers U23s in their hometown,” said Capital FC Timbers Executive Director, Collin Box. “This is a credit to these boys’ hard work as well as to the progress our club has made over the past several years.”

Announcement of more player signings are set for the coming weeks.
