BONNEY LAKE, Wash. – Conner Antley scored a stoppage-time winner for the Sounders U23s on Friday evening, lifting the home side to a 1-0 victory over the Timbers U23s. For the Sounders, it was their season-opener, while for the Timbers U23s, it drops the squad to .500 on the 2017 campaign.

“The rivalry didn’t disappoint tonight,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “For 90+ minutes, we did enough to keep a clean sheet against a good team on the road. We’ll have to take those positives along with the difficult end-game lesson into our next week of play.”

The first half was back and forth, and the Timbers U23s created a couple of quality chances, getting good looks on goal. One shot from the right side was saved, while another from the top of the 18-yard box missed just to the right of the goal, keeping the score at 0-0.

Defensively in the first half, Jordan Farr came up with some big-time stops, first saving a one-on-one breakaway before then making a pair of diving stops to keep the Sounders off the board in the first 45 minutes.

In the second stanza, the Timbers U23s made big defensive play after big defensive play, keeping the Sounders U23s off the board. The defensive backline and Farr continued to come up with key stops over the course of the 90 minutes, but in stoppage time, the Sounders U23s whipped in a curling ball from the right side behind the Timbers U23 defense. The ball found the head of the onrushing Antley, and Antley made no mistake, heading the ball into the left side of the goal to lift the Sounders to their season-opening triumph.

The Timbers U23s take a break from action and return home for their next contest on Monday, May 29, at McCulloch Stadium. Kickoff against Lane United is slated for 7 p.m.
