SALEM, Ore. -- Timbers U23 takedown PDX FC in a tight 2-1 battle to claim the USL League Two Northwest Division Title.
Another hot Sunday afternoon brought PDX FC and your Timbers U23 together for their final matchup of the 2021 season. The two held a tough 2-0-1 record against one another, just three points separating them from the first and second places in the Northwest Division.
The squad switched up their roster, starting Levi Johnson, Tim Beilic, and Caleb Kiner in for the usual Ivan Mykhailenko, Marco Afonso, and Emory Rapaport.
PDX FC, coming off a 8-1 W over Lane United FC, started the match with an unexpected 3' goal. Being down 0-1 early on however was not new for the Timbers U23 squad. A 3' 0-1 score didn't bother the team at all who recovered quickly, producing a goal in the 8' from Levi Johnson thanks to Angelo Calfo from the backline.
In classic Timbers fashion, Johnson quickly found the back of the net again in the 16', sliding past PDX FC defenders to finish a lose ball off the foot of Koa Santos outside the 18. The squad was up 2-1 at the half.
Second half momentum kept up for both teams, with temperatures rising both in the air and on the field which seems to be a reoccurring theme with these opponents. The Timbers U23 subbed in the assist king Marco Afonso who alongside Beilic and Johnson worked hard to make their 2-1 lead larger. However, no shots by either team found their way into the back of the net in the final 45'.
The match ended in a 2-1 Timbers U23 victory - securing their spot in the USL League Two Playoffs kicking off July 23.
The squad will play one final regular season game at home THIS FRIDAY, July 16, at 7PM at John Chambers Field.
