SALEM, Ore. – The Timbers U23s scored three first-half goals on Tuesday night in their PDL home-opener en route to defeating their Sounders U23 rivals, 3-0.

WATCH highlights from the big 3-0 win:

“A three-goal win over your rival at home was just what this team needed,” said Timbers U23s head coach Aaron Lewis. “Our defensive transitions were much improved and some clinical finishing early on, made all of the difference.”

Benji Michel scored twice in the span of two minutes in the seventh and eighth minutes, giving the home squad the early lead. Don Tchilao then headed home a Rey Ortiz cross in the 32nd minute, and the Timbers U23s rode that 3-0 score into the halftime break.

Some great saves on either end of halftime from Mario Sequeria kept the Sounders U23s off the scoreboard, as he ended up with nine saves in all, earning the shutout.

Michel finished with the two goals, while Ortiz recorded two assists in the victory.

The win was an important one for the Timbers U23s, as they head into a stretch with a number of home matches in which the squad will need to continue to register positive results.

The Timbers U23s are back in action next week when they travel to Bend to host Lane United FC at Summit HS. Kickoff for the match, presented by Tetherow, is slated for 7:30 p.m.
