VICTORIA,  B.C. – Gio Magana-Rivera scored a wonder goal on Sunday afternoon north of the border, lifting the Timbers U23s to a crucial road win over Victoria Highlanders FC, capping off the first weekend of USL PDL play in 2018.

“Three points were hard fought and really will be valuable heading into next week,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “The guys were better with the ball today and in defensive shape, which ultimately helped us keep a clean sheet.”

After a first half that saw neither side find the breakthrough, it was Magana-Rivera that provided the magic late in the second half, as he received a pass on the left side of the box in the 78th minute. After a couple of scissors over the ball, he cut to the inside and curled the ball into the top-right corner of the goal for the game-winner. For Magana-Rivera, the goal was his first of the 2018 season for the Timbers U23s. WATCH THE GOAL HERE:

For as good as that goal was, Zach Nelson was equally as impressive in goal for the Timbers U23s, making a number of fantastic diving stops to keep the Highlanders off the board, including a couple of point-blank saves, earning the shutout.

The Timbers U23s return to Canada next week for a pair of road games at Calgary Foothills FC on Friday and Sunday. Kickoff on Friday is slated for 6 p.m., while Sunday is set for 1 p.m.
