SALEM, Ore. – The Timbers U23s opened the 2017 PDL regular season with an emphatic 2-0 victory on Tuesday night at McCulloch Stadium, defeating the TSS FC Rovers in the shutout season-opening victory. Francesco Amorosino proved to be the standout for the U23s in the triumph, bagging a brace in the first half en route to the important PDL win.

“Tonight was a great start for our team,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “The group is understanding more each day of how we want to play, and I was pleased with each phase of the game during moments of the match. The individual quality here is good, and thus far the mentality to build something special has been evident.”

On the year, the Timbers U23s move to three wins and no losses thanks to the pair of preseason victories leading up to Tuesday night’s regular-season triumph.

Amorosino got in behind the defense in the seventh minute on a beautiful through ball from Reid Baez, and after taking a touch to his right past the defender, Amorosino buried his right-footed laser into the bottom-right corner of the goal, putting the home side in front 1-0.

Not long after in the 15th minute of play, Timur Zhividze whipped in a dangerous corner kick to the back post and found Amorosino who rose about the Rovers’ defense, heading the cross into the right-side netting to double the Timbers U23 advantage.

Amorosino almost had the hat trick when Steven Dal Molin bent a long cross in to the back post where Amorosino was waiting, but his shot just went over the top of the crossbar from six yards out, keeping the score at 2-0.

By halftime, the U23s had tallied 13 shots to just four shots for the TSS FC Rovers.

In the second stanza, TSS FC came out firing, starting on the front foot and began to generate more opportunities. Timbers U23 goalkeeper Jordan Farr was up to the challenge, however, coming off his line on a number of occasions to get to the ball first on 50/50 challenges and dismiss any dangerous chances. Farr did come up with one big save in the contest late in the game, earning the shutout in the two-goal victory.

Offensively, Amorosino led the way with the two goals and six shots, while Rey Ortiz also tallied six shots in the victory. Additionally, Gio Magana-Rivera recorded three shots for the U23s in the win.

For TSS FC, Matteo Polisi notched a team-best three shots in the defeat, while goalkeeper Andrew Hicks racked up seven saves while facing nine shots on goal.

The Timbers U23s outshot the Rovers on the evening, 19-8, and won the corner-kick battle, 5-4.

The Timbers U23s return to action in the USL PDL game of the week on Friday evening in Seattle against the Sounders FC U23 squad. Kickoff at Sunset Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m.
