OLYMPIA, Wash. – A world-class goal from Timur Zhividze had the Timbers U23s well on their way to a pivotal PDL victory on the road, but a goal eight minutes into the allotted five minutes of stoppage time tied the game for the Sounders U23s at 1-1. For the Timbers U23s, it marked the team’s third draw of the week.

“We have to find the balance today with being disappointed to give up a late equalizer and taking pride that we outplayed our rival on the road,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis.

Neither side came up with too many good looks at goal during the first 45 minutes, but it was the Timbers U23s that struck first in the second half. After a Timbers U23 attacker was taken down just outside of the 18-yard box, Zhividze lined up the shot and curled a beautiful free kick over the wall and into the top-right corner of the goal, putting the visitors up, 1-0.

The Timbers U23s almost doubled their lead later in the half, but a couple of shots just missed their marks, sending the game into stoppage time.

After the referees signaled for five minutes of stoppage time, the teams continued to play well into the 98th minute. The Sounders U23s eventually worked the ball down the field and earned a throw in near the Timbers U23 goal before launching a long throw-in into the box. After many bodies collided and the ball bounced around for a while, the ball eventually was in the back of the net, tying the contest at 1-1.

The Timbers U23s return to the field against the Sounders U23s back in Salem on June 13th. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at McCulloch Stadium.
