BEND, Ore. – Goals from Josh Noonkester and BJ Romac late in Wednesday night’s exhibition match at Summit High School lifted the Timbers U23 squad to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against South Sound FC. The game was played in Bend, Ore., and was hosted by the Timbers U23 Presenting Sponsor – Tetherow.

“What a fantastic night in Bend,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “We are thrilled that the central Oregon community recognized the quality of the two teams here tonight and supported us so well. Their enthusiasm played a big part in our group continuing the momentum we’ve established over the last few weeks.”

In front of a crowd of more than 700 in attendance, the sun set over the Cascade mountains and was the perfect setting for the comeback victory for the Timbers U23s. After the Timbers U23s failed to clear a ball in the 67th minute of play, leading to a goal for South Sound FC, Noonkester rose above the South Sound FC defense and headed in the tying goal in the 74th minute to make it 1-1.

Minutes later, Willie Spurr blasted a shot off the left post, and the Timbers U23s continued to press the issue in search of the game-winner.

The wall finally broke down as the Timbers U23s whipped in a cross from the left side and found the lurking Romac at the back post. Romac out-jumped his South Sound FC counterpart and headed the ball into the top-left corner of the goal in the 90th minute on nearly the last play of the match, lifting the Timbers U23 to the dramatic late win.

With a number of the Timbers U23 regulars not seeing action tonight, it gave the opportunity to many of the other players on the Timbers U23 team to step into the action during the exhibition match and show what they could do, leaving a lasting impression.

The Timbers U23 squad is back in PDL action on Sunday, July 2, when the team hosts Victoria Highlanders FC at McCulloch Stadium. Kickoff in Salem in what will be a pivotal PDL match is slated for 12:30 p.m.
