SALEM, Ore. – On what was another beautiful evening in Oregon’s state capital, the Timbers U23s finished off the 2017 preseason portion of the campaign with a 1-0 victory against Southern Oregon Starphire FC.

“We had stretches of decent play tonight with the ball and we are pleased with the shutout,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “With that said, we have to push each of these guys to be sharper moving into next week’s regular season. The group is hungry to get back at it on Friday to continue to build towards our team goals.”

The Timbers U23s started the game very positively, generating a number of opportunities early on in the attacking third, but chances were missed, leaving the score level at 0-0 through 20 minutes.

The breakthrough finally came in the 24th minute when the local Capital Futbol Club (CFC) product Stefan Wutte blasted a left-footed shot from the left side into the bottom-right corner of the goal, putting the Timbers U23s in front, 1-0.

The home side continued to create chances throughout the remainder of the first half, while also defensively, Jordan Farr was forced to make a pair of diving saves to keep the Starphire FC off the scoreboard.

In the second stanza, the Timbers U23s asserted their dominance, continuing to press offensively while maintaining the vast majority of possession. While the home side was unable to find the back of the net again, Farr and the defense held strong in the back, earning the team’s first shutout of the 2017 season.

The Timbers U23s will take the strong couple of preseason performances into their next match on Tuesday, May 16, when the team begins its official 2017 PDL regular-season campaign at home. The TSS FC Rovers are coming to town and will take on the Timbers U23s at McCulloch Stadium, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Tuesday night is also Kid’s Night, so any kid who wears a soccer jersey will get in for FREE. If you can’t make it to the match, the game will be streamed online through Facebook Live on the Timbers U23 Facebook page.
