SALEM, Ore – On a night that saw a score in both halves for the visitors, the Sounders U23s came into Salem and shutout the Timbers U23s, 2-0. The win evens the series on the year between the two sides, as the Timbers U23s had won just a couple of weeks ago here in Salem, 3-0.

“The Sounders’ size and physical play demanded that we get the ball on the ground and into space to ultimately get where we needed to go,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “Unfortunately for us, we were not clean enough in our possession game and that led to clear chances on goal. We will need to be better in that area if we hope to regain the form we want to have.”

In the 14th minute, a giveaway in the back led to Hayden Criollo getting in behind the Timbers U23 defense, and he buried his shot to make it 1-0.

Blake Bodily threatened for the Timbers U23s in the first 45 minutes, as did Timur Zhividze who came off the bench and ripped a shot on frame, but a good save from Akili Kazim kept the Timbers U23s scoreless.

In the second half, another giveaway on top of their own 18-yard box led to the Timbers U23s surrendering another goal, as this time Matt Carnefix pounced on the opportunity and slotted it past Mario Sequeria to double the Sounders U23 lead in the 67th minute of play.

That was all the visitors would need, as the Timbers U23s were unable to pull any scores back in the second stanza, resulting in the two-goal defeat.

The Timbers U23s are back in action on Sunday when they host the Victoria Highlanders FC. Kickoff at McCulloch Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
