“Even though tonight was a survive and advance situation, the guys not only accomplished that goal, but continued to establish the system we want to play the rest of the summer,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “To get better, while moving on, makes today very positive.”

The match started well for the home squad, as Benji Michel got in behind the defense and was taken down from behind, handing a red card to Kitsap in the 12th minute of play. Rey Ortiz then stepped up to take the 20-yard free kick, curling the ball into the bottom-right corner to put the Timbers U23s up, 1-0.

In the 34th minute, Ortiz curled in a dangerous cross into the middle of the box, and it deflected off of a Pumas’ defender for an own goal, putting the Timbers U23s up 2-0.

Another own goal for Kitsap put the visitors in an even bigger hole in the 50th minute, and then Don Tchilao made it 4-0 when he headed home a pin-point cross from Alan Cruz in the 61st minute.

Joel Walker came on as a sub in the second half for the Timbers U23s, and he made the most of his opportunity, receiving a pass and then breaking through the Kitsap defense, lacing his shot into the lower-right corner of the goal to finish off the 5-0 triumph.

On the night, the Timbers U23s owned a 17-4 shots advantage, and in goal, Mario Sequeria made three key second-half saves, earning the shutout in US Open Cup play.

With the win, USLPDL squads move to 31-20-10 all-time vs. NPSL teams.
