SALEM, Ore. – While scoring three goals and earning the team’s sixth shutout of the 2017 campaign, the Timbers U23s soared into the Western Conference Final Four thanks to a 3-0 triumph over Calgary Foothills FC on Tuesday night at McCulloch Stadium in the USL PDL Playoffs. The victory sends the Timbers U23s to Tucson, Ariz., where the team will play FC Golden State Force at 6pm MT on Friday night in the Western Conference semifinals.

“I am happy tonight for our players, the club, and the city,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “It is fun to reward those who had trust in us early with a big-time performance.”

The Timbers U23s had nearly all of the momentum early on in the contest, and when Bob Groenendijk made a penetrating run down the left side, he crossed the ball into the onrushing path of Francesco Amorosino. Amorosino made no mistake, burying his shot into the bottom-left corner to put the home side in front in the 37th minute, 1-0.

In the 43rd minute of play, Kris Reaves crossed a ball into the middle, finding the head of Benji Michel. Michel rose above the Calgary defense and headed it past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 just before the half.

In the second stanza, Calgary pushed the pace of the contest trying to get onto the scoreboard, but Jordan Farr came up with five big  second-half saves, keeping Calgary off the board.

The dagger came in the 74th minute of play when Gio Magana Rivera ripped a ball from six yards out into the back of the net off the assist from Rey Ortiz.

The win moves the Timbers to 9-2-4 overall on the year, while Calgary drops to 8-3-4 with the loss – a defeat which ends Calgary’s season.
