SALEM, Ore. – While once again playing in front of more than 1000 fans at McCulloch Stadium, the Timbers U23 squad finally finished off the win it had been looking for, defeating the Sounders U23s, 3-1, in a pivotal USL PDL match. The victory extends the Timbers U23 unbeaten streak to four games overall and marks the first win during that stretch of contests.

“I loved our team performance tonight,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “Our scores improved in every game against Seattle, and that is a tribute to our players. We outplayed our rivals in two-straight matches over the last nine days, and I believe we’re hitting our stride.”

The match was the third time the two sides had played each other, with the Sounders U23s winning the first meeting and the two teams sharing the points in a draw in the last match.

On a beautiful evening for soccer in Salem, the Timbers U23s didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard, as Gio Magana-Rivera buried his shot in the third minute off an assist from Andres Ochoa to give the home side the early advantage.

Francesco Amorosino continued his hot start to the 2017 campaign with a goal 20 minutes into the contest, doubling the lead for the Timbers U23s. Rey Ortiz served as the creator on the play and was credited with the assist.

Coming out of the locker rooms in the second stanza, the Sounders U23s earned a penalty kick and Trevor Jensen converted the opportunity, halving the deficit for the road side.

The Timbers U23s ultimately sealed the deal and made it 3-1 in the 77th minute when Willie Spur found the back of the net off an assist from Amorosino.

In the back directing traffic, it was Jordan Farr who came up with some critical saves throughout the evening, and the only goal conceded was on the penalty kick for the Sounders U23s.

The Timbers U23s (2-1-3) return to action on Friday, June 16, when the team travels back north again across the border to take on the TSS FC Rovers. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Swangard.
