VCU Players set to Join Timbers U23s for 2017 Campaign
SALEM, Ore. – The Timbers U23s announced on Tuesday afternoon that three Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) players would be playing for the Timbers U23 PDL team this summer in Salem. Steven Dal Molin, Francesco Amorosino, and Zeron Sewell are the three commitments for the Timbers U23s, pending league approval.
“When we started connecting with soccer programs nationally this year to build our team, Dave Giffard was one of the first calls we made,” said Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis. “The Rams program has a reputation of sending talented players with hard-working mentalities. Each of these players will add to our quality on the field and will no doubt contribute to the culture we are establishing this summer.”
Dal Molin, who was a junior midfielder for VCU in 2016, dished out four assists on the year and totaled 12 shots. While playing in 20 games during the 2016 campaign, he started 18 of those, leading VCU to the Atlantic-10 Conference Tournament Title game. As a part of the Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Rookie team in 2015, Dal Molin came to VCU after playing for the French U19 National Team. He advanced all the way to the reserves of the Ligue 1 squad and captained the Montpellier U17 and U19s.
Amorosino, a midfielder who hails from Washington D.C., proved to be a key piece on the VCU team that advanced to the Conference Tournament Championship contest, playing in 20 games while starting in 18 matches in 2016. He scored four goals throughout the season to rank third on the team in the category while also dishing out one assist. Prior to VCU, he was a member of the 2011 Youth National Champion squad while competing for ODP Virginia. Prior to that, he was born and raised in Italy and played youth soccer in Italy before high school.
Rounding out the three VCU players set to join the Timbers U23s, Sewell is a newcomer to the squad, having just joined the team in the spring and boasts freshman eligibility for VCU in the fall of 2017. Hailing from Morant Bay, Jamaica, Sewell was a Manning Cup Champion and Oliver Shield Champion in 2014-15. He was also named the Best Defender at the BIGGA STETHS Cup and was named to the ISAA All-Manning Cup Team in 2015. Additionally, Sewell led his team to the Lime Super Cup Championship in 2014 and the BIGGA STETHS Cup Title in 2015.
