Timbers U23s Add Three Portland Pilots to 2017 Roster
SALEM, Ore. – Timbers U23 head coach Aaron Lewis announced the signing of three players that will join the Timbers U23 squad during the 2017 season, with all three coming from the University of Portland. Rey Ortiz, Gio Magana-Rivera, and Kris Reaves all are set to join the Timbers U23s this summer, pending league approval.
“Coach Carlin-Voigt is building something special on the bluff, and these guys are playing a major part in that,” said Lewis. “We feel each of these guys bring a nice blend of experience, abilities, and skill-sets to help shape what we are trying to do here this summer. We are pleased to bring this group of proven winners in as our part of our initial announcements.”
Each of the three Portland Pilot standouts played an integral part in helping the UP capture the West Coast Conference (WCC) Championship in 2016 while advancing to the NCAA Tournament. These three join fellow Pilot teammate Reid Baez on the roster who was announced in the Timbers U23 initial signing.
Ortiz, who hails from Acapuloco, Mexico, played in 18 games on the year as a freshman, scoring two goals and dishing out three assists as a midfielder for the Pilots. Prior to playing with UP, he played with the U.S. U-15 National Team and was a Region IV and Cal South Boys ODP standout. Coming out of high school, he was ranked the top midfielder in Southern California and the 24th best recruit in the entire country.
Magana-Rivera, who hails from Hood River, Ore., played in all 19 games during his freshman season at UP while starting in 15 of them as a midfielder. He scored three goals while totaling 24 shots – the third-highest amount on the team. Prior to Portland, he was the two-time Oregon State 5A Player of the Year (2013 & 2014) before deciding to solely focus on club soccer following his junior season.
Reaves, hailing from Duluth, Ga., comes to the Timbers U23s after starting in 17 games as a defender for the WCC Champion Pilots in 2016, leading the team to earn a 0.91 goals-against-average on the year. Reaves also boasts national team experience, having played on both the U-18 and U-20 United States National Teams. Prior to UP, he played at Wake Forest, helping the Demon Deacons capture the ACC regular season championship and advance to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2015.
Announcements of more player signings are set for the coming weeks. In addition, announcements about ticket sales and season packages to Timbers U23 home games will be coming soon.
